Loren

I'm Loren, and every month I curate a collection of handmade cards I've designed, from the words to the sketches and plant-dyed paper colors. They're made by my husband and our team in our studio in rural California, down the road from the little farm where we live with our four boys, big white dogs, and a flock of sheep and chickens.

This month's story

Our roses have been in full bloom, filling the air with their heady fragrance and driving the bees mad.

Rosy tones inspired the soft palette of the bundle, with shades of pink and cream. The silk ribbon is dyed to a lovely muted raspberry using walnut crystals and brazilwood.

Postcard and illustration card

We chose a postcard featuring roses from my garden, and an illustration card of antique pruning shears and a rose clipping.

Secret Garden card

"Where you tend a rose, a thistle cannot grow." From The Secret Garden — to me, the perfect encouragement for someone who has been laboring to bring forth something beautiful.

Friend card and swan card

"Life is better with a friend like you" — a collaboration with my husband Levi, who offered the perfect phrase for the friendship mugs card.

And a lovely swan "happy birthday" — an English-countryside match for the roses.

This month's affirmation

Every month we choose an affirmation to go with the bundle — a little something to put on your nightstand or tuck in your mirror, or pass along to a friend (or stranger) who needs to hear those encouraging words.

This month we chose "I am at peace." Here's how I would spend a few minutes meditating-praying-thinking-processing through the phrase:

I am at peace.
Peace surrounds me.
Peace is within me.

Deep breath.

If I find myself resisting peace

What is pulling me away from peace?
I release — forgive — accept — surrender — that thing.

I repeat, as long as I need

Thank you for peace.
Peace surrounds me.
Peace is within me.
I am at peace.

As I'm writing this, I'm looking out the window at my own little rose garden, with my ducks waddling through, and it feels like a serendipitous moment of life imitating art. While my rose garden needs a good weeding (haha!), I'm so glad I get to share its beautiful essence in paper form with you this month.

Hand crafted with love

Farmette paper starts with natural cotton fibers, upcycled from the garment industry, and abaca fibers from a plant in the banana family. These are processed into pulp with a Hollander beater, plant-dyed, and pulled by hand from the mould and deckle. Once dry, each sheet is letterpress printed on antique presses using photopolymer plates made from hand-drawn designs — one piece of paper at a time.
